About Seijoh University

History of Seijoh University

Formerly Nagoya Meitoku Junior College, Seijoh University was founded in April 2002 as a four-year university with two faculties: the Faculty of Business Administration (student quota: 300) and the Faculty of Rehabilitation and Care (student quota: 80). After the completion year of 2006, we began to examine the possibility of establishing a graduate school, primarily as an extension of the Faculty of Rehabilitation and Care. Then, in 2007, we applied for approval to establish Seijoh University Graduate School of Health Care Studies (Master's Program), which was subsequently founded in April 2008 with a student quota of 12.

In AY 2008, the University underwent its first Institutional Certified Evaluation and Accreditation, a national scheme introduced in AY 2004, and was deemed by the Japan Institution for Higher Education Evaluation to have fulfilled the university evaluation criteria for the period up to the end of AY 2022.

Guiding Principles of Seijoh University

Japan was once a poor yet populous country, short of land and without much in the way of natural resources. Today, however, we have grown into a society renowned for its freedom and material wealth. To the people who lived in Japan 50 years ago, or to those who live in less developed countries today, this prosperity may seem like a dream. However, this success is the result of strenuous efforts by the Japanese people to learn and develop their abilities, and our drive to improve our scientific technology and culture and produce outstanding products and services. Guided by our Founding Spirit, Nagoya Ishida Educational Foundation has helped more than 70,000 graduates make their way into the world, contributing to the culture and wealth of Japan.

This prosperity has certainly made our society richer, but it has not always made us happier, and we now face a host of tough new challenges. From an age in which poverty required us to unite our strengths and work together, we have passed to an age of material wealth in which cooperation and mutual help are in serious short supply. In a world where more and more people are choosing to live entirely for themselves, many are unable to maintain the right distance from others. At junior and senior high school, and even at university, more students are skipping school, neglecting their studies, or simply failing altogether, and there are cases where students attend only to disrupt the classes for others. This poses a serious challenge to the continued health and well-being of a cultured society. It may even represent a danger.

The primary task for universities in Japan, then, is to correctly grasp these social circumstances, and with this understanding to educate individuals capable of contributing to the healthy development of society across a wide range of fields. Seijoh University seeks to realize the Founding Spirit of the Nagoya Ishida Education Foundation in today's world of higher education and contribute to the development of Japanese society and the wider international community based on the three Guiding Principles listed below:

  1. Humans are by nature communal and interconnected--either directly through our families or indirectly through communities and society. Seijoh University will strive to expand its education based on a deeper academic understanding of this truth.
  2. Seijoh University will endeavor to create new cultural value, through the development of concrete knowledge and skills that enhance people's lives in the local community.
  3. Seijoh University will promote a deeper understanding of the world, history, society, and humankind while nurturing in all members of our community the aptitudes and abilities that enable us to live noble and honest lives. Building on this foundation, we will also strive to communicate our views of the world and of human nature to the outside.
